Carnivore Conservation Crew
Carnivore Crew is the perfect opportunity if you are interested in zoo medicine, want to contribute to building back a critically endangered species local to North Carolina, and want to get hands-on experience with wolves! No other veterinary school has the opportunity to manage a population of critically endangered animals. We work with the zoo med faculty, the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan, and US Fish & Wildlife to care for these wolves, just like AZA zoos. Students are the primary caretakers of these wolves, so we have shifts every day – our advisor, Dr. Tara Harrison, always tells us that husbandry & nutrition are 98% of zoo animal medicine, so this experience is an excellent foundation!
Carnivore Conservation Crew members get:
- Exclusive access to immobilizations and physical exams of our wolves (which students run point on)
- Shadowing opportunities with Dr. Harrison (past experiences include trips to Duke Lemur Center, black bear anesthesia and exams, and many more!)
- To learn how a Species Survival Plan works (genetic optimization of breeding pairs for endangered animals) – we have an active breeding pair that will hopefully give us pups next year!
- Husbandry experience: record-keeping, medicating, feeding, watering, and cleaning
- To learn how important this species is to North Carolina and be able to communicate this with the public!
- And more!
